OIS Research Conference 2027

► Submission and conference tracks

Submissions both empirical and conceptual in nature are welcome. Extended abstracts (500-1000 words) for advanced papers and short abstracts (250-500 words) for early-stage projects can be submitted related to this year’s special conference theme (Openness and collaboration under pressure? The role of OIS in an era of strategic competition) or to OIS topics in general, such as:

1) Open and collaborative research approaches: How openness and collaboration shape different stages of the research process, including crowdsourcing and citizen science, university-industry collaboration, open data and materials, digital platforms, or human-AI collaboration.

2) Organizational and institutional conditions: How research ecosystems, organizational designs, policies, intellectual property regimes, incentives, or impact assessment enable or constrain open and collaborative research.

3) Individual and behavioral foundations: Why and how scientists engage in open and collaborative research, including their motivations, skills and capabilities, attitudes and beliefs, and the role of institutional entrepreneurs.

Please also note that:

• We explicitly welcome submissions of both early-stage and advanced research projects.
• The research to be presented must not have been accepted for journal publication.
• Participation in the conference is initially reserved for those whose abstract has been accepted for presentation. Registration for any remaining spots without a presentation will open in February on a first-come, first-served basis.

The submission deadline is January 11, 2027. All submissions will be reviewed by the Organizing Team, and notifications of acceptance will be sent by February.

► Conference program

In addition to inspirational Paper Sessions, the conference program includes plenary sessions related to this year’s conference theme (Openness and Collaboration Under Pressure? The Role of OIS in an Era of Strategic Competition) such as Keynote speeches, OIS Debates, and an OIS Experiment where we “walk the talk“ by engaging in and reflecting on novel ways of doing research.

The conference also organizes a Junior Paper Development Workshop on May 12 in the afternoon. Early-career scholars (PhDs and post-docs) can indicate their interest in participating and receiving in-depth feedback from senior mentors during the submission process.

A more detailed program will be available in early 2027.

► Practicalities and conference fee

The conference will be an in-person meeting at Universitat Politècnica de València, Ciutat Politècnica de la Innovació (CPI), in 10 min walking distance from the beach, and with online streaming for selected sessions to enable participation for a broader audience. The core conference program will commence on May 10 at noon and conclude on May 13 at noon. We expect participants to attend the entire program.

The conference fee is 250 Euros. PhD students facing financial constraints can apply for a reduced fee of 100 Euros. To apply for a reduced fee, please reach out to the conference organizers before registering. The conference fee covers all meals including a fabulous conference dinner (and of course our famous Zotter chocolates).
